Lundi/ Monday 04.04.2011

We wake up at 7 am 30. In the street many students walk to go to the universities which are on our street. Breakfast, more varied than in San Juan, Jens then goes to work. He has 8 blocks to go.
I leave at around 10 am to go to the center. I walk along the Bernardo O'Higgins Avenue to the east. At one point I heard noises: A manifestation is approaching. These are students who are protesting against the cost of universities. The public are not free and private are even more expensive. The demonstration is peaceful but there are many "Carabineros" with weapons and who seem a little bit nervous. They even have a shielded bus, with the windows protected by grilles.
Santiago is a very big city, 7 millions people live here. It looks very modern and dynamic.
I visit La Moneda, the presidential palace (where Allende died in 1973), the cathedral and I want to go to the Historical Museum but it is closed on Mondays. I visit a cultural center where an exhibition entitled "Arte en America" takes place. Beautiful center, underground, in front of La Moneda.
Then I'll have lunch at a Chinese restaurant where I take a chicken dish with rice and vegetables plus a beer for 4000 pesos (40 kr or 5 €). The serving is so generous that I can not finish.
Back at the hotel, tired. I read the newspaper "La Tercera" I rest and write.
Jens returned around 5.30 pm. He rests a bit and we go for a walk. We find a restaurant on the other side of O'Higgins. At 8 pm, Carlos and Silvia came to take us to dinner. We suggest the restaurant Ostras Azocar, the one we found. They agree. We leave by car and Silvia, who is driving attempts to cross O'Higgins, this is apparently prohibited. All other cars to turn right coming from our street and we go through and turn left. We must cut the line of taxis, buses and cars coming at good speed! People honk, are flashing their lights, but it finally we manage to drive across.
Carlos is a Chilean who has lived more than 20 years in Bergen. He emigrated after the Pinochet coup. He worked with Jens at the University of Bergen. Then he returned to Chile in 2001. Silvia is his parner. We spent a wonderful evening. Good company and good food, oysters and fish. When Haakon, the Norwegian prince, came to visit in Chile, Carlos, who has dual nationality, was invited. We go home, walking, at  11 pm.
